What is CERTESL?
CERTESL is an award-winning independent study program designed and delivered by the Centre for Continuing & Distance Education (CCDE) at Saskatoon's University of Saskatchewan, a respected presence in distance education and online learning. Accredited by TESL Canada, SCENES and TESL Ontario, and recognized by other professional associations of ESL teachers in Canada, the CERTESL program is highly regarded for the quality of TESOL training it provides to current and prospective teachers of ESL/EFL.

How will CERTESL prepare me to meet my English teaching goals?
CERTESL lets you choose courses that will train you to teach in ESL, EFL or ESD settings, depending on your own career or travel plans. CERTESL courses will teach you about the ideas and approaches that underpin effective communicative language teaching; ESL/EFL learner needs assessment and evaluation; TESL/TEFL lesson planning; selection and development of TESL/TEFL materials; and English grammar and phonology. our Supervised Practicum in TESL/TEFL will let you master the skills needed by successful English language instructors as you work with ESL/EFL classes and qualified teachers either in your home community or at the beautiful University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon, Canada. If you are already an experienced teacher, you may choose the Professional Project option which will let you conduct TESL research or prepare TESL curriculum materials that will help you in your own professional setting.

Who can register in CERTESL?
Both native and non-native speakers of English are welcome in CERTESL provided they have graduated from high school with appropriate English course credits. Applicants must also write a short essay to demonstrate that they have adequate formal English skills. Non-native speakers must also demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to at least 80 in the TOEFL-iBT, with no less than 20 in each band; 550 in the paper-based TOEFL (213 computer-based); or equivalent scores in another recognized test of English language skill, or have completed either three years of high school in English or at least 18 credits of postsecondary education using English as the medium of instruction. Non-native speakers whose English is below the required 550 TOEFL level but above 500 TOEFL (or the equivalent in another recognized test of English skills) are welcome to check out our two-course TEFL certificate.

How are CERTESL and TEFL courses delivered?
Most of CER TESL’s TESL and TEFL courses are offered in both online and paper-based distance-delivered formats. Pick the delivery style that works best for you.

Applicants who would prefer to start their training face-to-face instead of by distance can start their training with the on-campus Spring or Summer TEFL Intensive option through the University of Saskatchewan’s Centre for Second Language Instruction. Students who pass the Intensive with an average of 60% in each half and pass its optional final exams will receive transfer credit for two courses into CERTESL, as well as a $75 application bursary if they complete their next CERTESL course by distance within one year.
